Standing with Yonkers After the Riverdale Avenue Fire
A devastating fire on Riverdale Avenue has left families in Yonkers facing the kind of disruption no one ever expects. In a matter of hours, residents were forced from their homes, routines were shattered, and many are now dealing with the uncertainty of displacement, lack of utilities, and what comes next.
In the video I recently shared, I stood at the scene to do two things. First, to acknowledge the reality of what our neighbors are going through. And second, to make it clear that this is exactly where leadership needs to step in.
I want to begin by expressing my deepest gratitude to the brave men and women of the Yonkers Fire Department, along with our police officers, EMS personnel, and all first responders who acted quickly and professionally to protect lives. Their courage and commitment to this city are nothing short of extraordinary.
I also want to recognize the local elected officials and community leaders who responded and worked to assist residents during the immediate aftermath. When moments like this happen, it is critical that leadership is present and engaged.
But as we all know, once the flames are out and the emergency crews leave, the real challenges often begin.
Families are left asking: Where do we go? How do we replace what we’ve lost? Who can help us navigate the next steps?
Too often, the answers are unclear.
That is a problem we must address.
This fire is also a reminder of something bigger. At a time when residents are facing real emergencies, this year’s county budget reduced funding by 8 percent across the board, including areas that directly impact public safety and community support. At the same time, millions continue to be allocated elsewhere while families in moments like this are left searching for help.
We need to get back to basics.
Government’s first responsibility is to protect people and ensure their safety. That means prioritizing funding for first responders, emergency preparedness, and the resources that help residents recover when disaster strikes. It means making sure that when something like this happens, no family is left without support or direction.
That is one of the reasons I am running for Westchester County Legislator.
Once elected, I will establish a clear and direct line of communication for residents during emergencies like this. Whether it is connecting displaced families with temporary housing, helping residents access local assistance programs, or coordinating with agencies to ensure no one falls through the cracks, my office will be available and ready to act.
Public service does not end when the sirens stop. It begins there.
Yonkers is a strong community. We take care of one another. And in times like this, we are reminded of both our vulnerability and our resilience.
To the families impacted by this fire, please know that you are not alone. Our community stands with you.
And as your future representative, I will stand with you too.
