What Does the Westchester County Legislator for District 16 Actually Do?

A Westchester County Legislator represents roughly 60,000 residents and votes on the county budget, the county tax levy, county infrastructure spending, and county housing and planning policy. District 16 covers a section of Yonkers, and its legislator sits on the 17-member Westchester County Board of Legislators in White Plains.

What powers does a county legislator have?
County legislators approve the annual county budget, which determines the county portion of every resident's property tax bill. They approve the county capital budget, which funds roads, drainage, and major infrastructure projects. They sit on committees, such as Housing and Planning, Infrastructure and Housing, Public Safety, and Budget and Appropriations, that shape policy before it ever reaches a floor vote.
What does a county legislator NOT control?
This matters because voters often blame county legislators for problems that are actually controlled elsewhere. School budgets are set by local school boards, not the county. City services like garbage collection and city street repair are controlled by the City of Yonkers, not the county. State roads are maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation.
Why does this distinction matter for District 16?
Because accountability only works when voters know exactly what their legislator can change. I am running for this seat, and I believe in being honest about the limits of the office as much as its power. The county budget, the county tax levy, county infrastructure dollars, and county housing policy are all real, direct levers a District 16 legislator controls. I intend to use every one of them for this community.
