In January 2018, when my opponent was sworn into office, the average one-bedroom apartment in Yonkers cost $1,700 a month. Today, that same apartment costs $2,400 a month. That's a $700 monthly increase, or $8,400 a year, a 41% increase in rent for the exact same size apartment over the course of one term in office.
That's not a talking point. That's the record, and it's worth sitting with for a second. A 41% increase in rent means a lot of Yonkers families are spending a much bigger share of their paycheck just to keep the roof they already had, with nothing added, no upgrades, no extra space, just a much bigger bill.
I've said this before and I'll keep saying it: I've knocked on more Democrat doors than Republican doors in this campaign. This isn't about which party you're in. It's about looking honestly at the record of the people currently representing you and asking whether it's actually working for you. When rent goes up 41% in less than a decade and wages haven't kept pace anywhere close to that, that's not a partisan complaint. That's math.
