What Voters Are Telling Me at the Door and Why I Know District 16 Is Ready for Change

There's no substitute for knocking on doors.

You can run ads. You can post on social media. You can give speeches. But the only way to really know what a community needs is to show up at the door, introduce yourself, and listen.

I've been doing that all across District 16, in the single-family blocks of northwest Yonkers, in the apartment buildings near the waterfront, in the neighborhoods that have been here for generations and the ones that are changing fast. And I want to share what I'm hearing, because I think the people of this district deserve to know that their concerns are being heard and taken seriously.

"My taxes went up again and I don't know how much longer I can stay."

This is the single most common thing I hear. Longtime homeowners, people who have lived in District 16 for 20, 30, sometimes 40 years, telling me they are being slowly priced out of their own homes. Not by the mortgage. By the taxes. This is a county-level issue, and it demands a county-level response. Read more about the property tax fight here.

"My rent went up $400 a month and there's nothing I can do about it."

Renters in District 16 are getting squeezed from every direction. The luxury market is setting the tone, and working-class renters are paying the price. The county has a role to play in housing policy, and right now too many people feel like that policy is working against them. More on the housing crisis here.

"The flooding on our block has been happening for years. Nobody does anything."

Infrastructure accountability is real, and it's urgent. Families shouldn't have to deal with flooding, dangerous roads, or crumbling drainage systems and then watch nothing change election after election. Watch Dan address the flooding crisis directly here.

"I don't know who my county legislator is."

This one is telling. A legislator who isn't visible in the community, who isn't at the door, who doesn't show up is a legislator who isn't doing the full job. I believe a county legislator should be a constant, visible presence in the district. Not just at election time.

"I didn't know you could run against her."

That one gets me every time. People are ready for change. They just need to believe change is possible.

It is possible. That's exactly why I'm in this race.
